Anti Abolitionists - The Gentleman's magazine

This article was published in the Gentleman's magazine on 23rd April , 1789. The plan for the abolition  of the slave trade is , in every view of it , silly and unwise . It is founded on the mistaken idea of kindness , or rather on ignorance , stupidity and passion. The Negroes  of Africa , in their native  country , are apparently useless in the great scale of human society . They are totally incapable of improvement , arts or sciences. The only way to promote their civilization , to make them useful in their life , and happy in themselves , is to introduce them to a state of activity and industry. That is the most horrible argument I have ever heard against the abolition of slavery.

Anti Abolitionists - Matthew Gregson

Matthew Gregson was a rich Liverpool businessman who played a big role in the making of Liverpool . He said that how abolition will ruin the city Liverpool. He said that: "Abolition will bring ruin to Liverpool.Complete abolition would mean financial loss of more than 7 million euros. Not only would owners, masters, officers and sailors would be affected, but the whole town would suffer as there would be less dock duty, less employment for boat builders, etc, and a decrease in the rents of houses, shops and warehouses in consequence of the  unemployment, and likely emigration of seamen , boat builders and men in associated trades. This proves that the city of  Liverpool was dependent on slavery. If slavery was abolished Liverpool  could not grow into a large city.

Why did slavery last so long?

The  Atlantic Slave Trade lasted so long for many reasons - 1. The slaves were  usually non-rebellious . They had a polite nature. They seldom used to protest. But few of them even killed their master. 2. They could survive in very harsh conditions . 3 . A lot of profit could be made by this business .
